As an experienced Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), I know that a lack of confidence around junctions can be a major stumbling block to progress. Learner drivers often miss a step or complete the routine in the wrong order, leading to potential safety issues for themselves and other road users.
Problem: Learners not understanding or recalling the MSPSL routine at junctions and therefore driving in a potentially unsafe manner.
Solution: An explainer video going through each step that can be watched before each lesson as a reminder.
1: Identify the goal:
Learner drivers use the MSPSL routine accurately and effectively at all junctions.
LO 1: Know the order MSPSL.
LO2: Understand what each step entails.
LO3: Be able to take this into real world situations in order to improve driving skills.
I spent two weeks with 12 different learner drivers, noting down all errors with the basic junction routine of MSPSL. And as an experienced ADI I felt confident that I could bring my experience to the course design process.
2: Presentation:
An animated storytelling video, to recreate driving and making these decisions and actions but in a fun, easy to watch way. By introducing our nervous novice Amy learners would be able to connect with the story. The scenario is simple: Amy cannot recall MSPSL, it makes her nervous and she needs to recap the information before trying it for herself.
3: Graphic Design:
Cartoon animation with whiteboard writing.
Scenes are simple either in street or in car with two characters.
AI voices for talking characters.
Background upbeat music.
4: Interactive Elements:
Choice points to test the learner on what the next action point is.
There are two point I would amend in the next step of the process:
1: AI voices - I would record real people to enable more expression in the narrative. To do this I would use my Blue Yeti Microphone and Audacity or Garageband to edit.
2: 'What ifs' - it is important for learners to understand the consequences of not following MSPSL so I would add in some interactive 'what if' scenarios or quizzes.
