I decided to design this course after having a conversation with my previous Head of Department, a music teacher who also looks after the Early Career Teachers (ECTs) in her school setting. She explained that some ECTs have a low ability level in terms of confidently planning effective lessons quickly and efficiently.
As an experienced music teacher I wanted to help new teachers with core lesson planning. I spoke to the HOD as an SME and I also felt confident that I could bring my experience to the course design process.
Problem: ECTs are not confident in relating learning pedagogies with subject specific skills.
Solution: An on-demand training video which can be viewed as many times as required recapping the pedagogy and giving examples of its uses.
1: Identify the goal:
Enable music ECTs to quickly and efficiently plan effective lessons.
LO 1: Identify the 6 stages of Bloom's Taxonomy.
LO2: Understand how to match musical skills with each level.
LO3: Create effective and scaffolded learning experiences in music
2: Presentation:
An interactive presentation with a final game to check knowledge and understanding.
Available on demand and repeatable to cater for a teacher's busy timetable.
3: Graphic Design:
A set colour scheme relating to each level of Bloom, so that any information relating to that level is colour coded.
Clear and uncluttered stage making it easy to digest.
4: Interactive Elements:
Click to Reveal, Drag and Drop, Match ups and Spot Questions, where learners create a real life lesson plan to be taken away and used, or utilised as a template for other topics. Learners have multiple attempts.
Click to reveal for musical examples about that level.
Drag and Drop exercise during lesson planning
Match up learning objectives to tasks.
Spot Questions to check knowledge.
Culminates in a Jeopardy Style game to test understanding of the levels and their use in musical skills. Learners can win and lose points and a constant score is displayed on screen.
Final game board. Learners pick a question based on how many points they want to win.
Learners choose the correct answer.
They win or lose points.
Board changes to green or red depending on result and score updates.
Learners cannot move through the slides until all elements are completed, ensuring all learning points have been viewed.
After completing the course I shared it with my HOD who confirmed it would be a very useful resource for schools and training establishments to offer. She advised that a downloadable resource would be a good addition so I created these PDFs and will be adding them to the Resources Tab on the course.
